The first town I hit on Lake Superior was Thunder Bay, and a few kilometers outside the town is a memorial to Terry Fox. Terry Fox is a Canadian icon and a model for heroism anywhere. After losing a leg to cancer he decided to set himself a challenge. He set out to run across Canada, doing a marathon every day. Sadly, some 3500 kms after leaving St John's, cancer returned. Terry never made it but his name is engraved on Canadian hearts.

I stopped for breakfast just after passing this sign. A truck driver offered to give me a ride to Sault St Marie. He said he would be there in 8 hours. I was looking at 5 or 6 days. What a temptation!
Shores of Lake Superior.
Made it! I read about Sault Ste Marie in school geography books. Now I can see it for myself.
