Bill Furlong ran the Downtown Hostel in St John's. A wonderful, friendly man with a helping hand for everyone. Equally friendly, Bill Strickland, owner of Bill's Bicycle Shop. For $32 Bill packed the bicycle back into a cardboard box and took me to the airport. But then he got a trolley for me and went to check in the bike at over-sized baggage while I checked myself in. After a bit of re-scheduling, my flight was put back about 6 hours. So Bill drove me around St John's to show me the local area. Then he took me back to the hostel and collected me later to take me back to the airport. And no extra charge. Back in Heathrow and trying to board the National Express bus, a grumpy driver moaned about my bike, threatened that he could not fit it in the luggage bay and tried to be as unhelpful as he could; I was back in England.
